Category: Ambidextrous

To successfully drive organizational ambidexterity, a Chief of Staff needs to develop several key personal competencies. First and foremost, systems thinking is required – the ability to see the big picture and understand how different parts of the organization affect each other. Tolerance for uncertainty and the ability to handle ambiguity are crucial, as CoS often has to navigate environments where goals and processes are not fully defined. Strategic communication is another key competency; CoS must be able to translate complex ideas and create consensus among different stakeholders. Because the role often lacks formal authority, the ability to influence without authority, through trust and relationships, is essential. Finally, curiosity, adaptability, and a willingness to constantly learn new things – both about the organization itself and the world around it – are required. These qualities enable CoS to both support efficiency in the present and drive innovation for the future, and to inspire others to do the same.
