Appointing a dedicated board member who supports the Chief of Staff (CoS) can create several strategic advantages, especially in organizations with complex change or innovation initiatives. Such a member can serve as a sounding board, contribute with experience and networks, and facilitate dialogue between the board and management. This can strengthen the CoS’s role as a bridge between strategy and operational activities, and contribute to faster and more well-rooted decisions. In Swedish consensus culture, where flat hierarchies and openness are valued, a link person can promote transparency and trust. However, it is crucial that the role is clearly defined and that the division of responsibilities between the board, the CEO, and the CoS is clear, in accordance with the ABL and the Swedish Code for Corporate Governance. In this way, the organization can benefit from mentorship and support without risking double oversight or unclear decision-making mandates.
