The Chief of Staff (CoS) plays a crucial role in driving scenario analysis and business continuity planning (BCP/BCM) to strengthen the organization’s preparedness for crises. Scenario analysis involves the CoS leading workshops and exercises where various crisis scenarios – from war to sudden market disruptions – are analyzed and consequences are mapped out. This enables the identification of critical dependencies, vulnerabilities, and necessary actions. With the support of ISO 22301 (business continuity management), the CoS develops detailed continuity plans that describe how the business should be maintained in the event of various types of disruptions. The CoS is responsible for regularly testing these plans through simulated exercises and integrating the lessons learned from the exercises into the plans. In Swedish organizations, it is important to involve both management, operational teams, and union representatives in the process, in line with MSB and labor law requirements. CoS also ensures that the organization has clear escalation procedures, communication plans, and that all employees know what is expected of them in a crisis. By working proactively with scenario analysis and continuity planning, CoS builds an organization that is prepared for the unexpected and can act quickly when the crisis strikes.
