In geopolitical crises, such as war or armed conflict in the immediate vicinity, the Chief of Staff (CoS) is central to ensuring a swift, coordinated, and effective crisis response. The CoS often leads the organization’s crisis management team and serves as the hub for information flow between management, operational units, and external stakeholders such as authorities and partners. According to Swedish MSB principles, crises should be handled as close to operations as possible, but the CoS is responsible for quickly escalating issues to the appropriate level and ensuring that decision-making paths are clear. The CoS coordinates resource allocation, prioritizes critical functions, and ensures that continuity plans are activated. During the crisis, it is crucial that the CoS maintains clear communication both internally and externally, and that the organization follows laws and regulatory requirements, such as reporting under NIS2 or other EU directives. The CoS is also responsible for documenting the course of events and conducting post-analysis to learn from the future. By acting quickly, coordinating resources and ensuring transparency, CoS helps the organization to manage even the most serious crises and protect both operations and employees.
