Clear boundaries and mandates are crucial to avoid role conflicts and create legitimacy for the Chief of Staff (CoS). It is the CEO’s responsibility to communicate the purpose, responsibilities, and powers of the CoS role to the entire organization. The mandate should be explicit: does the CoS have the authority to make decisions on behalf of the CEO, or is the role more advisory and facilitative? It is also important to define which issues the CoS should handle and which are outside of the role. In leadership transitions or major changes, the boundaries should be renegotiated and documented. In Swedish companies, where flat hierarchies prevail, it is especially important that the CoS role’s mandate is clearly anchored in both management and operations to avoid misunderstandings and political tensions.
