The CoS role carries certain risks, including high workload, the risk of burnout, and the role's dependence on the manager one works closest to. The role is often diffuse, with unclear mandates and expectations, which can create stress and uncertainty. Since the CoS rarely has formal personnel responsibilities, one must lead through influence rather than authority, which requires strong relational skills. If the manager one works for quits or changes strategy, the CoS position can quickly change or disappear. It is therefore important to have clear agreements, support from management, and a plan for personal development.
