The Chief of Staff in Sweden has extensive responsibility for ensuring that the organization complies with the GDPR and the Swedish Data Protection Act (SFS 2018:218), which is overseen by IMY. The CoS must ensure that personal data is processed legally, that the rights of registered individuals are respected, and that incidents are reported to IMY within 72 hours. The CoS is responsible for conducting impact assessments (DPIA) for new processing, training staff, and ensuring that data protection is integrated into all processes (”privacy by design”). In Sweden, it is common for the CoS to coordinate data protection work together with data protection officers (DPOs) and involve trade union partners in major changes. Compared to other EU countries, the Swedish oversight is known for being strict and emphasizing transparency, proportionality, and consultation with employees. In some countries, such as Germany and France, data protection officers are mandatory in more cases and supervision is more formalized, but the basic requirements under the GDPR are harmonized throughout the EU.
